Vernie Ray Hendrix, 89, passed away Saturday August 31. 2019 at the Jewell County Hospital, in Mankato. He was born May 25, 1930 on a farm near Howard, Ks.
He is survived by his children, Mickie Levin (Jeff), Julie Butterfield (Larry) and Jim Hendrix (Sandy); grandchildren, Bryan Hoard (Corinne), Melanie Owings (Scott), Keri Byers (Ben), Nicole Hemmy (Seth), Brandon Butterfield, Courtney Hendrix; step-grandchildren Emily Shelton (Eric), Nick Levin (Emily) nine great- grandchildren; and five step-great-children.
He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Hendrix, his parents, and one sister.
Vernie served our country in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1956. He was honored with a Good Conduct Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal while serving.
Vernie then attended Pittsburg State University where he completed his teaching degree. Vernie taught at Columbus, Kansas, Bonner Springs, Kansas, Delphos, Kansas, Minneapolis, Kansas, and Mankato, Kansas. Where he retired. He also coached High School boys and girls Basketball, and High School boys and girls Track. Sports were his life as he still played basketball and pitched fast pitch softball into his adult life.
Vernie also enjoyed fishing. This was his favorite hobby. He loved to catch the, “Big ones!” He loved spending time with his grandkids telling them all sorts of fishing stories. We are not sure that they were all true!
Cremation was chosen so there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Salina, KS on Saturday September 28 at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, make donations ot the Jewell County Hospital in Mankato Kansas. Kleppinger Funeral Home, 409 Broadway, Jewell, Kansas66949 is handling the arrangement.
