Sister Vera Klaus died Friday, January 27, 2017, at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, KS. She was 85 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 68 years. She was born in Ellis, KS, on March 26, 1931, to Paul and Catherine Wasinger Klaus, the youngest of six children, and was baptized Lucille Anita. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS on February 9, 1948. On August 15, 1948, Lucille received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Vera. She pronounced first vows on August 15, 1949, and final vows on August 15, 1952.
Sister Vera received a diploma from St. Louis University in Administration as a Food Service Director. She was a dietician at hospitals in Sabetha, KS and Belvidere, IL. Later she completed training in Topeka, Salina and Atchison, KS as an Assistant Physical Therapist. She used her physical therapy education at St. Mary’s Convent and Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, KS.
Sister Vera was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings. She is survived by her sister, Pauline Marie Brown, Ocala, FL. A Bible Vigil Service will be held January 31 at 9:00 a.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Mary Jo Thummel as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be January 31 at 11:00 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Fr. David Metz presiding. Burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery. Nutter Mortuary, 116 E. 6th St., Concordia, KS is in charge of arrangements.
